On January 8, 1792, Mary Mandeville married Boaz Venner at Parramatta, one hour west of Sydney. Mary was a Queen arrival from 1791. She had been tried in County Kilkenny in 1790 and sentenced to transportation for seven years; her crime is not known. Boaz had arrived on the Neptune in 1790 charged with robbing a house in London three years earlier with female accomplice Eleanor Daily.

By 1795 Mary was living with another Neptune arrival, Joseph Butler. He was convicted at the Old Bailey for theft and sentenced to transportation for seven years. They both lived at Mackenzie Creek in the Hawkesbury district of New South Wales. The neighbour was William Pawson (a Scarborough arrival), who lived with Mary's shipmate Mary Smith.

On July 20, 1795, Smith was tried and acquitted for setting fire to the Butler house. Earlier in July, the two Mary's had got into a scuffle over some chairs Smith had lent Mandeville. At the trial Mandeville stated that the quarrel had involved much abuse on both sides and said that Smith left "clapping her hands as she said 'you bloddy, bloddy whore, before this day, month, I will give you a warm Arse'".
